Promenade 1914-1915
Maurice Brazil Prendergast
Known for his almost mosaic-like painting style, the late oils by the American painter, Maurice Predergast are considerably different from the work by 'The Eight', a group of artists with whom he is commonly associated. Prendergast fell under the spell of the European Postimpressionists, most notably Paul Cezanne. In Promenade, Prendergast employs brilliant colour throughout the large canvas. The horizontal procession of sunlit figures on holiday were constructed out of big, regular dabs of paint - details such as faces and hands are purely incidental.
