Interior with a Lady Seated 1914
Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell 1883-1937
Cadell was among the artists known as Scottish Colourists who took their lead from the earlier Glasgow School in their brightness of colour and vigorous brushwork. They also worked in France during the early 1900s: Cadell was in Paris from 1899 until 1903. The even bolder approaches of the French avant-garde, particularly of Fauvist artists such as Henri Matisse, inspired the painterliness of works such as this. Its elegant interior also reflects Aesthetic-Movement taste and the influence of Whistler. The model is possibly Miss Don Wauchope of Edinburgh, who came from an old Scottish family and often posed for the artist in a black hat and dress.
